In June 2017 the Las Vegas "Old Timers" Media Group officially disbanded. It was a tough decision to make; we held on as long as we could, but all GREAT things must sometimes come to an end. And so it is with this group started nearly 20 years ago. Every month since that first meeting in 1999 those interested in telling, learning, and making Las Vegas history met to commiserate, eat good food, catch up on one another and to see and hear amazing presentations from people who lived Las Vegas.
Why did we say farewell? We lost members to age, illness, and death so our numbers were shrinking. We could not find a venue to host us that was suitable for all - long-standing members chose not to attend for a variety of reasons and we lost some important core members. It was becoming increasingly difficult to coordinate all that goes into arranging the monthly meetings. Lastly, a new organization, based on our model and our membership began meeting on a different weekday and while at first some of the "old timers" were resistant to change, they eventually saw the good in this group and began attending.
It was a bittersweet goodbye for all, but a change that was necessary.
This blog, as well as the group's Facebook page will remain active for a time, but will at some point also be retired.
The group's founder, Frank Mitrani, resides in Kanab, Utah and has asked should anyone wish to contact him, he would welcome the call or email. I encourage readers to do so, thanking Frank for all he did for the group and to catch up with him. He can be reached at 435 899-9772 or mitrani.frank@gmail.com.
Thank you to all that made this group possible for so long. For those that have gone on - we miss you. For me, I miss all of you and will keep you in my thoughts and heart always.
