Record Breaking Member Attendance for a Field Trip!

Sixty members attended the meeting/lunch/tour at the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health?  60 members! That is a record breaker.  And I missed it!  But Cynthia Cicero kindly stepped in and helped out Don and Gretchen Payne at the door and assisted Rich Friedland as needed while he made announcements.

Here is Cynthia's recap of the meeting:

Those of us who toured the Ruvo Center were treated to a world class research and treatment center for Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis.   And I do mean world class since there are Ruvo Centers in Florida and Abudabi with more planned throughout the world.  Every aspect of the clinic was designed to treat clients with the utmost care and dignity.  The story of how the Ruvo Center came into being is just as amazing as the center itself.  From a dinner Larry Ruvo held with close friends and family to honor the memory of his father and donations to Alzheimer’s research, Larry Ruvo’s journey brought him to the construction of this wonderful facility.  No better way to honor his father’s life.
Thanks to Laura Fritz and Elaine Villanueva Taylor for this wonderful tour and lunch and to Lisa for organizing the event.

Photo Taken:  I understand that a group photo was taken at the event and I have a phone call in to see if I can get a copy.  Perhaps we can have copies made and members can get a copy at the next meeting if they are willing to pay for the cost of the print.  I'll find out how much when I get in touch with the photographer.

April Meeting Recap

Coming home from such a wonderful meeting where friends reconnected or met for the first time and enjoyed one another's company to hear the news of the awful events in Boston (Boston Marathon Explosion)really put a damper on my day.

It was so nice to hear our speaker, Joyce Moore, recount stories about the "good old days" of Las Vegas when kids spent their free time at the Blue Onion, pulled pranks like picking up a VW Bug and putting it inside the door of a downtown casino, and fearing their parent's wrath (grounded to their bedroom for a month) because they took the car out without permission.  Although I did not live through those experiences, it was so refreshing to hear those great stories; yet, it made it so much harder to hear about the tragedy of today.  I know that our country has gone through so many growing pains; I just wish in my heart that we had found a solution to end these violent acts.

Anyway, Joyce brought a lot of smiles and laughter as she shared the many memories recorded from her classmates at Rancho High School when they got together for their 50th high school reunion.  I'm sure she'd be glad to hear from you if you have a memory to share, or would like to hear more of the stories.  Joyce works in the Special Collections (a true Las Vegas treasure trove) at UNLV.

Here is a short video of Joyce at the beginning of her talk:

NOTE: for those of you wanting to see the video of Laura Fritz from the March meeting, I still haven't gotten it loaded to You Tube yet.  The video needs to be broken up for easier uploading.  I'm working on it!

We had some brand new members join us today.  Thank you for coming and we hope to see lots more of you.  Jule and Florence Mayhew returned after an extended absence; we are so glad to see you back!  And, poor Murray Westgate, in town all the way from Thailand, messed up the dates of our meeting and missed seeing all his old friends.  The good news is he will still be here in May and will join us for the Lou Ruvo Brain Clinic FIELD TRIP.

Speaking of the field trip:  I signed up many more that will attend the Monday, May 20 event to the Cleveland Clinic/Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health.  If you wish to go, I need an RSVP by May 10.  If you know a member that doesn't get this message, please tell them to contact me if they want to be added to the list.  Remember, NO MEETING WILL BE HELD AT THE WEDDING ROOM next month; we will be at the CLINIC.  Lunch is, as usual, $17.00 per person.

Happy Birthday Wishes to:
Jackie Brett
Jane Pinjuv
Dave Pinjuv
Milt Bozanic

and Gretchen Payne.

Have a wonderful month and see you all soon.

March Madness at the Las Vegas Media Group Luncheon

No madness, really - I just wanted to say that!

What a great meeting we had on March 18th, just like every month! We had some brand new faces that are planning on coming to future meetings, and we had visits with some friends we haven’t seen in a while.

Frank Valeri, Joe Thomson, Felix Silla, and Mike Schaefer

Laura Fritz, a native Nevadan, came to talk about the history of how the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and the Cleveland Clinic came to downtown Las Vegas.

Her talk shared the personal story of its beginnings and how it has become a world-renowned medical research center.  The 20 minute video of her talk will be on the Las Vegas Media Group You Tube channel (give it until 3/19 for it to be accessible) at http://youtu.be/93nI3NbPxeA

Our group was so impressed by the talk and Laura with us that she has invited us to the Center for a tour and lunch.  So, MARK YOU CALENDARS. Our May lunch meeting on May 20th will be held at the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health.  More details to follow, but this will be one event that RSVPs will be a must.

Joe Thomson got up to tell us about an effort to stop the Searchlight Wind Project, where land near Spirit Mountain in Searchlight will be covered with huge windmills.  For more information and to find out how you can add your voice to this effort, contact Joe at
thomsoj2@unlv.nevada.edu

Rollie Gibbs brought in a photo of the monument that has been created and will be placed in front of the Old Las Vegas High School.  To find out more about the project and the alumni association, go to their website at LVHSAA.  Rollie also asked us to attend the coronation of the next Helldorado Rodeo Queen at the Elks Lodge at 4100 West Charleston.  The event takes place on April 6 at 7:00 pm.  For more information, call Rollie at 702 873-7838.

Lisa Gioia-Acres invited the group to attend the book signing and panel to discuss her book, Showgirls of Las Vegas at the Nevada State Museum on April 6 from 4-6 pm.  Lisa will be joined by former showgirls highlighted in the book, Frank Mitrani who shared his photographs, and current showgirls in costume.

In the photo of the four guys above, Felix Silla might be familiar to some of you (or not!).  Felix played the character Cousin It in the television show, The Addams Family.  Felix came to our meeting as a guest of his friend, Mike Schaefer.  We have asked Felix to come and share his story with us in April.  He's pretty busy right now and said he would let us know if April fits into his schedule.

Here are some more photos from the lunch meeting.

February 18, 2013 Meeting Recap

Monday's lunch meeting went well; we had a great turnout, great conversations and connections, and a terrific speaker. Charles Silvestri shared how his family arrived in Las Vegas many moons ago and how the move was the best thing that happened.

Since then his family has grown and many members still call Las Vegas home.
He talked about working his way up from a casino worker to his tenure in the Clark County School District and how he is instrumental in sending 12 students a year to Washington, D.C. The Charles Silvestri Junior High School is named after him!
Two old friends reconnect after many years.
Charles and Frank Valeri

Helen Mortenson, passionate about the project she has been working on for years asked the group to lend their voice in support of the designation of the Upper Las Vegas Wash as a national monument. As many of us know, the area is rich in Ice Age fossils. There is a meeting taking place on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 1:30 pm at the Grant Sawyer State Office Building, 555 E. Washington Ave., Room 3161.
Happy Wedding Anniversary to our dear friends, Don and Gretchen Payne who tied the knot on Valentine's Day 49 years ago. We want to be invited to the party for your 50th!

Bo Boivert and Frank Valeri generously contributed photos** from their private collection, during their time as professional photographers, for Lisa Gioia-Acres' book, Showgirls of Las Vegas.

Both Bo and Frank have an AMAZING collection of photos of some of the most famous people to perform or visit Las Vegas. Anyone interested in revisiting Las Vegas glory days should ask to see their photos.

Next month we have two speakers who will talk about the Lou Ruvo center.

See you in March.

** Two photographs in the book, located on page 26 were misidentified as coming from UNLV's Special Collections. In fact, they were from the Frank Valeri photographic collection.

Howard Rosenberg and Sophie Tucker

What a great way to begin a new year, hanging out with members of the Las Vegas Media Group!  We had our average turnout of nearly 40 attendees, with a few news faces and the pleasure of seeing some people who haven’t been to a meeting in a while.  Just before we lined up for lunch (roast beef, chicken & noodles – yum!), Lisa did a presentation for the group, sharing the experience of her Nevada History students and the interviews they conducted with LVMG members in October.  Lisa was really nervous that 1) technology would fail and 2) her Power Point presentation would be a bust.  But, with the help of wonderful Helen Mortenson, who brought her projector and screen and set it all up, the presentation was a great success.  It was very touching to share the students’ impressions of the individual’s they interviewed.  Each of the interviewees received a DVD with the student’s paper, presentation and audio recording.

After lunch, Thalia Dondero’s guest spoke before the group.  Howard Rosenberg came to our meeting all the way from Reno, Nevada.  Howard teaches at University of Nevada, Reno, was once an entertainment critic and stories of both of these would have been interesting.

But, we were really happy to hear his wonderful, funny, and entertaining stories of his experiences growing up as the nephew of famed singer, Sophie Tucker.

It was a treat to hear such intimate memories.  We welcome Howard back any time to keep them coming!

Happy Birthday wishes go out to:

Thalia Dondero
Tom McCormick
Joan Massagli
Frank Mitrani
Helen Mortenson
Rich Newman
Ralph Pressler

Our next meeting is on Monday, February18th (another holiday so some of you scarce members might make it!).

November 2012 Meeting Recap

What a big day we had today at our meeting.  Our speaker, Ms. Linda Smith from Opportunity Village had the power to bring some members we haven’t seen before or for a long while.
Linda Smith on right poses with Opportunity Village (and
Las Vegas community activist) Thalia Dondero
Her talk was so poignant; she shared her experience about being the mother of a challenged son, her friendship with many members of the Las Vegas community, and how Opportunity Village is such a benefit to our community for over five decades.  Her talk was inspiring and touching.  Linda also invited our group to have their lunch at Opportunity Village sometime in the near future.  In addition, she passed out two tickets to each member in attendance for the Magical Forest.  Thank you, Linda – you are truly an inspiration.

You can the video of Linda’s talk at our LVMG YouTube channel

We also heard from Rollie Gibbs on his efforts on behalf of the Helldorado Parade; from Helen Mortenson about her work as a site steward for the Ice Age Foundation at Tule Springs (see article link below), and from Don Payne.  Don and Gretchen Payne, our hard-working money-takers at every Las Vegas Media Group lunch meeting shared that we have a little extra money in the coffers.  Don asked the permission of the group as a whole to donate some of our money to two worthy local organizations: Opportunity Village and the Salvation Army.  A collective agreement was shown with the entire room raising their hands in a “YES!” Don will share with us next month the amount donated.

If you did not see the recent articles about members of our group, please click on the following links:

Thanks to the generosity of the group, who chipped in money today, we now are the owners of an AMAZING sound system that will do justice to the AMAZING individuals that come and share their Las Vegas stories with us each month.  Thank you, ALL!

We wish to give a HAPPY BIRTHDAY message to the following whose birthdays fall in November:

·         Kid Carey

·         Sara Denton

·         Marty Harrell

·         Mike Pinjuv

·         Claytee White

·         and new member Chris Klineburger

Our next meeting will be held on 17th.  To ensure a seat and a plate of delicious food made by our hosts, the Wedding Room, you must RSVP no later than Friday, Dec. 14.  Send an email to lasvegasmediagroup@gmail.com.  Lunch costs $17.00 and is well-worth every penny!

What is the Las Vegas Media Group???

No, we are not a Public Relations firm. The name is sort-of a misnomer. As our "About Us" section indicates, this organization began over a decade ago when retired members of the Las Vegas media: journalists, photographers, television news people met monthly to reconnect and recall their days on the front lines documenting Las Vegas history as it happened. There are two people that are responsible for the makeup of the eclectic group that attends our monthly meetings today. Frank Mitrani, former Las Vegas Sun photographer and co-founder of the Las Vegas Media Group, also known as the Old Timer's Club, never excluded anyone from attending a meeting or joining the group. Don Payne, retired Las Vegas News Bureau chief and original member said to Frank, "If the organization becomes an official one, with by-laws and rules, then don't count me in."

Frank took Don's ultimatum to heart and the group has never become a formal one, and that, I think, is the key to its long-term success and the fact that today we have over 140 members. Since the first meeting in January of 1999 the group has never missed meeting on the third Monday of every month - that is over 12 years of monthly meetings!

I came on board because I met Frank and the group back around 2002. I expressed an interest in attending a meeting where I might learn the history of my adopted town. Frank put my name on his email invitation and I've been on it ever since. In fact, once you attend a meeting or ask to be on the email list, you are automatically a member!

A few of us have attempted to change the name. For one, the group, while made up of lots of "old timers" is not exclusive to those who are retired and "up there in years." Nor is it made up now of only members of the media. In fact our membership includes hobby and professional historians, entertainers from the old days and those that are still working, a Federal court judge, Las Vegas High School alumni’s, local businessmen and women, university and college staff and faculty, authors, and many, many more.

A few of us more progressive-thinking members (you know, the Upstarts) tried to convince the group to change their name; we offered suggestions we felt more appropriately identified our group, but those "old timers" said, "If it ain't broke..............", well, you know the rest. So, it's the Las Vegas Media (or Old Timers) Group for us.

We invite ANYONE who cares about preserving Nevada, particularly Las Vegas history, as well as those willing to share their own stories with us, to join. Remember, you are not asked to pay a fee (your only obligation is to buy your own lunch!) nor asked to abide by any rules (except those that are common courtesy like no talking during a speaker's presentation and ALWAYS RSVP to the luncheons).

If you join us, I promise you will be in the presence of Las Vegas movers and shakers past and present; you would be amazed by who you might sit next to. You will leave with stories about our town from those that witnessed history unfolding and you will be amazed.

Want to contact us? You can email lasvegasmediagroup@gmail.com or call Lisa Gioia-Acres at 702 245-9206. Frank Mitrani has moved out of town and doesn't make it to our meetings too often. But, Frank will always be our fearless leader and he is always interested in hearing from friends old and new. You can contact Frank at 435 644-3467 or at frammit@xpressweb.com.

Hope to see you soon!
